“Cook and serve your dishes, design and decorate your restaurants, and expand your culinary kingdom with new unlocks, abilities and dishes in procedurally generated locations. Classic cooking action with permanent rogue-lite progression. Hire your friends – or do it all yourself!” – Steam Description

In PlateUp! you and up to three friends run a restaurant. Pick your food, decorate your space and keep up with the ever increasing number of customers. Everyday you survive brings new challenges. Choose your dishes wisely and maybe even try out some automation to help you survive 15 hectic days and unlock a new franchise!

  • Graphics– The graphics for the food are surprisingly detailed. Even if an item has multiple things you need to add to it (Mushrooms, Meat, Carrots etc) you can tell what the difference is and make sure your orders are correct. Meanwhile, the graphics are a little plain when it comes to your character. There are different body colors, outfits, and hats to make you stand out from your friends.
  • Gameplay– PlateUp has a wonderful game play loop that has me coming back again and again. I’m introducing new players to the game all the time. Each run is completely different even if you pick the same food item to start with. There is Twitch Integration for those of you that are streamers, and also a thriving modding community on Steam itself.
  • Sound– I find the music to be very repetitive and often play with all sounds turned completely off. There are sounds to tell you when things are done cooking so you don’t burn things, but there are also visuals so playing with the sounds off is easy enough.
  • Controls– I find the controls to be a little easier with controller so that you can reach corner counters, but you can play with mouse and keyboard. It can be easy to misclick items if you are going quickly but overtime you get used to it and no longer really think about it.
  • Story– There is no story in the game. You make the experience what it is. You can roleplay with your customers, and your friends, but for the most part the game is about getting the food items to the customers as fast and efficiently as possible.

Final Thoughts

Pros:

  • Fun gameplay loop
  • Great game to play with friends
  • Every run feels different

Cons:

  • The music is very repetitive
  • Reaching corners can be a little hard on keyboard and mouse

Plateup! is a wonderful game to play with your friends! I highly recommend this game if you enjoy rogue-lite games, cooking, and a little bit of chaos. Just make sure to have some of your own music on standby.
