“Gear up for a battle through hell in this roguelite Bullet Heaven Arena Autoshooter with Doom-inspired gore vibes, metal music, and a satisfying combat feel. Wield five weapons at once, upgrade and merge them to forge indestructible builds, and bring divine justice to a world on the brink of chaos.” – Steam Description

Arms of God is an arena autoshooter, similar to Brotato. Also similar to brotato, and the start of this games gimmick, is that you can wield up to 5 weapons. You combine like weapons to increase the tier of their weapon which also changes the weapons that they are. The tier 1 machine gun becomes a minigun at tier 3, for instance.

There are 60 stages across 4 campaigns that you will complete as you journey through hell in Arms of God, and each stage has a random generated events. These random events can range from collecting 4 flags to killing a certain number of enemies around a chalice to fill it. The events across the different maps give a fair bit of variety as you build your character.

The meta progression really brings this game together. I was really struggling to enjoy it at the beginning of my playthrough, every run felt difficult and I lost quickly. It was a disheartening experience, but after a few meta progression unlocks the game clicked and I was able to put builds together and start to progress. Towards the end of Inferno difficulty, the final and hardest of the current difficulties, I had fallen into my favored builds and was already achievement hunting. If I had a critique, it would be the beginning curve is steep. Though, at the same time, you’re fighting waves of demonic forces, so maybe you’re supposed to be getting kicked in the mouth for a bit.

- Graphics– The graphics aren’t bad, they are realistic and gritty. Leaning toward the gorey side of survivors like Yet Another Zombie Survivors, which is a stylistic choice. I prefer the pixely cartoony style in my survivors because the zany stretched graphics are funny to me, but I understand the visceral, gritty motif Dark Jay Studio is going for here and they succeed. The graphics do suffer from a “visual clutter” of sorts, where sometimes there is just too much going on the screen that blends together.
- Gameplay– The gameplay loop follows the bullet hell/heaven formula, if you’d played vampire survivors or brotato, you get the idea. Waves of enemies will come at you and you mow them down with the weapons of your (or RNG’s) choosing, until you survive the timed wave. You select upgrades to your stats or improve your weapons and do it again until the final boss. I’m biased, and if you’re reading this review, you probably are too; but I think it’s a good take on the genre.
- Sound– Music is doom inspired and handled by Ivory Tower Soundworks. It’s got some high BPM and headbanging moments to keep you engaged without it being overpowering to the games detriment. The one area the sound had some trouble with is that the volume varied drastically from impossible to hear and deafening. Most of the time I was playing, I had to keep it around 10% master volume.
- Controls– Controls are standard for the survivors genre, WASD to move, space to dash, and E to interact with the objectives on the map.
- Story– The story follows you as you select one of 10 religious characters and battle through swarms of demonic forces across the 4 acts of the story, each act broken into 15 stages. You are shown a small cutscene at the beginning of the game to show the sacred arms and you are then tasked with rebuilding the Cathedral, the Order’s headquarters as you play.

Final Thoughts
Pros:
Cons:
- Visual Clutter
- Weapons sometimes lack weight/impact
- Weapons balancing (Dev is working on it)
Overall I do Recommend Arms of God, if you’re a fan of the bullet hell genre. The 10 characters have perks that make each one play a little different. So, if you’re going to start playing this game, I implore you not to give up when it’s difficult at the beginning, persevere and you might find the character that was made for you and your playstyle. I, myself, have a few achievements left to snag for the 100% before I put it down until future updates.
