“Solarpunk is a survival game in a technically advanced world of floating islands. Alone or together with your friends, you can construct buildings, grow food, craft gadgets and hop on your airship to explore distant islands in the sky.” -Steam Description

Solarpunk is a relaxing farming survival sim. You build bases, farm crops and fly small airships amidst a sky-based map of islands. As you progress and upgrade your airship, the range of travel extends further and further from the starter island. You unlock new crops, tools, and devices with a focus on green energy.

The overall experience has that “just one more thing” addictive game loop you would find in other popular farming sim style games. There never seems to be any lack of things to do or goals to accomplish. It doesn’t matter if your aim is purely progression, or nailing a certain aesthetic with decorations and construction.

Graphics โ€“ The graphics are appealing to the eye with their simple and vibrant art style. The only thing that stands out would be player customization. The only problem found with the graphics related to the player customization. Even the most masculine body type still appeared quite feminine. There was a lack of clothing options which lead our character to feel bland in this vibrant landscape.

Gameplay โ€“

  • Overall: Menus are put together quite nicely. Interacting with the world for farming and laying out the infrastructure for your farm/base is pretty straight forward.
  • Game UI: There were areas of the game that felt there was a lack of instruction and lead us to brute forcing the system to work. This happened most notably with the logic gate block. Trying to figure out the mechanics by referencing the game Survival Manual proved unhelpful at times and this could turn into a proverbial wall for more casual players.
  • World Logic: The animals you find and obtain are not used for food, do not reproduce on their own unless you have empty beds, but do provide great ingredients. This felt a little off from what normal surviving sims do and was confusing at first. Once you expand your farm and can make seeds of your own they lost some of their importance in our playthrough. Over all the world logic leads to a lack of motivation more like a normal farming sim, and less like a survival game. Health seems to only exist to facilitate the avoidance of fall damage and starvation. Hunger and thirst are solely to facilitate your ability to sprint and avoidance of starvation. The game would have felt the same if these were not included. There were some food buffs that appeared but they didn’t have any clear effects that we could tell. The gameplay loop of mechanized green-themed farming itself is still quite satisfying despite the lack of motivation.

Sound โ€“ Sound design and quality are adequate. The auditory cues for multiplayer were on point.

Controls โ€“ The controls are fine overall. The only exception being the airship controls. They have a bit of a learning curve to them especially because when you upgrade them they get faster each time.

Story โ€“ Due to the game not having an story elements this category was omitted. While a cozy farm sim doesn’t “need” a story; there is so much character to the world that it feels like there should be one. There is a robot vendor, for example, who lives in a little floating airship house and facilitates your upgrades. While he’s great for mechanics and for the gameplay loop, his existence feels hollow and unexplored. That is perfectly acceptable, but I hope the developers understand that there is great potential for an expansive story here. This game could go beyond just farming on the sky islands.

Final Thoughts

Pros:

  • Cozy Vibes with a Beautiful Art Style
  • Gameplay Loop is Satisfying
  • Building Mechanics are great, allowing for both purely utilitarian build styles or deeply creative projects that never end

Cons:

  • Minor Bugs can occur, but are already being addressed
  • Character Creation is a bit shallow with minimal customization
  • Worldbuilding is superficial, lacking a real story

To be very clear, I love this game, and can’t wait to see where it goes from here. Should updates bring more to do I will absolutely seek them out in the future, and I hope to see changes to the few flaws I found.
