“Isometric insurgent simulator. Fight on foot and in vehicles, build and steal a private arsenal and bring the war home to the businessmen who started it all in this continuation of the Brigador saga.” – Steam Description

Brigador Killers is a level based extraction isometric shooter similar to what you might find in Zero Sievert. However, unlike Zero Sievert, there is a legitimate power fantasy that you wouldnโ€™t find in an extraction shooter normally. But, man, you donโ€™t start out that way. Make sure you remember that kick keybind itโ€™ll get you out of many tough spots. However. as the title might suggest you do end up killing your fair share of Brigadors as you paint the town red with the three factions in the game. The first faction you meet starts you off the game leaving you with bad blood. They are the cops, the corporates, the orderlies that on a normal day would range from neutral to good but in the world of Brigador and its oh so corrupt government structures made by those in charge, the Brigadors. The next faction that has made its home in the oppressed made by this system. You find the Corvids that share a very mad max appearance and the same ruthless demeanor as a resident you might find in that franchise. Lastly, you have the Spacers that have a very retro 90โ€™s spacecraft with all the laser weapons to boot.

Foot Slogging it

While fighting these factions on foot, similar to the Remnant game series, you have to hold your aim button to fire your gun as there is no hip-fire/point-shooting. Furthermore, to increase your view in this isometric shooter you need to crouch. Different weapons will zoom in your camera for different amounts. This follows the logic that a pistol will have less effective range than a rifle. However you will find the rifle will take longer to bring in the accuracy of the shots compared to your hand sidearm. But one touch I do very much enjoy as early on my favorite weapon for getting rid of trash mobs was the Stretch bolt action shotgun. This was because shotguns donโ€™t fall for the one shot at ten feet and 20 shots beyond 10 feet gimmick. A shotgun with a long barrel can reach out and touch someone and it is perfect for getting people hiding behind cover or knocking heavies on their ass. Which comes into another thing to look out for while out on the hunt for Brigadors is that you need to keep moving in combat because if you donโ€™t you very well might get knocked over yourself and turned into Swiss cheese.

Do’s and Don’ts

Now lets get into some “do’s and donโ€™ts” of Brigador to help with getting a good head start at the beginning of the game. Lets start with the fact that I would suggest playing the demo before getting the game as it will not only help you get an understanding of how the game functions but also whether or not you want to buy Brigador Killers. After you have put an hour or two into the demo and have decided you want to continue, first things first, in the prologue there is a mission where you get to choose between using a walker and a tank. The choice is yours but before you start the mission get in both and drive them around the staging area. As this is an isometric game sometimes it can take a bit of getting used to the way vehicles work and you should take this time to poke around in the settings to see what is best for you. Secondly, be a loot goblin there is a back pack in the game and you should use up all the space your inventory has. Not having enough ammo can really stall you on missions and so I would suggest making sure you are doing those salvage missions the game provides for gear and ammo. Lastly, for this game you want to get good at managing your distance. For example the police have less than lethal ways to put you down but the officers around you that still have pistols and lets say they werenโ€™t two happy you turned their fellow man to strawberry jam.

Driving in my Car

The vehicles are very special in Brigador Killers as they allow you to bring home that sweet loot but also at the same time help you rampage across the levels with unparalleled firepower. Although you are going to need to be a little patient as you only begin to see vehicles only after you get to chapter 3 which took me around 2.5 hours to get to. Now to be fair, there is a little more driving before then but you wonโ€™t be working with upgunned vehicles. That is to say, equipping a vehichle with heavier, larger, or more powerful weapons than it originally carried. Speaking of upgunned vehicles, by the time you get to chapter 3, you should be fairly familiar with the crafting system. You will get even more familiar with it when it comes to getting upgunned vans, cars, and an APC. Mind the fact that you will need an extra gun laying around, and for this purpose I would say you would want something fully automatic, for your first gun with wheels.

  • Graphics– The now unique art style I find easy on the eyes and really builds that gritty world that Brigador Killers I believe is going for without being too edgy. That helps me when redoing missions for things I might have missed the first time around whether it be the loot missions or not.
  • Gameplay– Early on environments are tense where you need to manage your sightlines and distance. Which makes it really engaging and with the variety of weapons you have to choose from. Plus Vehicles once you figure out the upgrade system make you feel invincible. Just make sure you donโ€™t get stuck on a wallโ€ฆ
  • Sound– The ambient sounds are good and I havenโ€™t found them out of place. Weapons have unique enough sounds that I can pick them out in a firefight. The music really gets you hyped with its synth-wave and drill sounds. The only complaint that I find that I have is that enemies, particularly armored enemies get drowned and can catch you by surprise. It would be nice if they had a nice loud engine sound or sounded their horn when getting into combat.
  • Controls-The controls for player movement are pretty easy to get the hang of as well as aiming and crouching to extend your vision. Vehicles on the other hand require some getting used to and tinkering with the setting to make sure you arenโ€™t going to drive off to you death.
  • Story-Overall the story I would not say has been super engaging to me. Like I know that the system is corrupt here on mars not why. I know that Solo Nobre is degrading but the events of the previous game are not well introduced to someone who is new to the franchise. That might be the problem but the overarching themes are strong enough still to get me to read the text and not just skip though it but I still donโ€™t really find myself attaching myself to the characters the Brigador Killers.

Final Thoughts

Pros:

  • Good gun-play on the ground
  • Amazing music design
  • A wide selection of weapons and play-styles to choose from

Cons:

  • Still very early access with systems not fully flushed out
  • The ammo economy is difficult with how many weapons you have
  • Vehicles feel like they should have more impact earlier on

I would Recommend you wait for this one.

I would say that I have enjoyed my time as a Brigador Killer overall but I know myself and I have a high pain tolerance for missing content and bugs. So if you get Brigador Killer and you arenโ€™t happy with it donโ€™t let it kill you with a thousand small cuts from the UI to the ammo economy. I would suggest putting it on the shelf and dust it off later. I think that Stellar Jockeys will pull through on this one. I say this because you can tell there is still a lot of love for the game with its silly placeholders for assets not fully finished in menus. The setting and terrain of the game really works with that older style of map design. The one where you can tell there were premade assets placed again and again but with enough variety in the assets that the game is never really visually boring. Once again, to reiterate, the on foot combat really shines. Where it falls flat for me would be the vehicles that the first game was known for. The build up to them just takes too long after giving us a taste in the prologue, and from where I am at in the game, there is not way to craft ammo for your favorite weapons.
